asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science how many primary classes in Manchester had more than 40 pupils in January, 1969; what percentage that was of the total; and what are the latest available figures.

In January, 1969, 226 classes in primary schools maintained by Manchester local education authority had more than 40 pupils; this was 11.8 per cent. of the total. By January 1970 the number of such classes had been reduced to 126, 6.4 per cent. of the total.
