asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science how many primary classes in Bristol had more than 40 pupils in January 1969; what percentage that was of the total; and what are the latest available figures.

In January, 1969, 118 classes in primary schools maintained by Bristol local education authority had more than 40 pupils; this was 10.2 per cent. of the total. By January, 1970 the number of such classes had been reduced to 52, 4.3 per cent. of the total.
