HC Deb 23 March 1970 vol 798 cc288-9W
102. Sir G. Sinclair

asked the President of the Board of Trade (1) in view of the evidence of the British Airports Authority to the Roskill Commission at its third hearing, how many aircraft movements he estimates will occur at Gatwick in 1980; and how many air passengers he estimates will embark and disembark there in 1980;

(2) in view of the evidence of the Board of Trade working party on traffic and capacity submitted to the Roskill Commission, how many aircraft movements he estimates will occur at Gatwick in 1980; and how many air passengers he estimates will embark and disembark there in 1980.

Mr. Goronwy Roberts

I now estimate that air traffic in the London area in 1980 will be in the range 45–65 million passengers and 400–550 thousand air transport movements. Within these totals, the traffic using Gatwick will depend, for example, on whether there is then a third London airport, the development of facilities at Gatwick, the extent to which development of air traffic control will have increased capacity at Heathrow And Gatwick, and the amount of over-spill from Heathrow.
