HC Deb 18 March 1970 vol 798 c130W
57. Mr. Younger

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what is his latest estimate of the percentage increase in the costs of housebuilding from 1965 until the latest convenient date; and if he will make a statement.

Dr. Dickson Mabon

The average cost of building a 4-apartment house in the public sector in 1965 was about £3,600 and in 1968 about £4,400. These figures include land, site development and servicing, and fees.

Mr. Buchanan-Smith

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what recent estimate he has made of the effect on the housing programme of the increase in building costs.

Mr. Ross

It is impossible to isolate the effect of a single factor, but the amount of house building now in progress suggests that increases of cost have not adversely affected the public programme.

Mr. Buchanan-Smith

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will now publish an interim report on Professor Sidwell's study of house building costs which he commissioned.

Mr. Ross

Yes.
