asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what was the total public expenditure on Scottish universities in each of the last five years, expressed in real terms.

I regret that it is not possible to answer the Question in the precise form in which it is asked but the following table shows the grants paid to universities in Scotland on the advice of the University Grants Committee and of the Computer Board:
