HC Deb 05 March 1970 vol 797 cc150-1W
Mr. David Mitchell

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what is the average waiting period and the maximum waiting period between sentence and admission to borstal training for young men sentenced in Hampshire; and whether they are all held in separate accommodation from adult prisoners during this period.

Mrs. Shirley Williams

For offenders sentenced in Hampshire to borstal training the average waiting period between sentence and reception in a training borstal over the past year has been about 13 weeks. The maximum period was normally 16 weeks, although occasionally transfer was further delayed for medical or other special reasons. These offenders are accommodated separately from adult prisoners at the remand centre or prison at Winchester and then at the borstal allocation centre at Wormwood Scrubs.
