asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what was the total amount allowed in income tax relief on mortgage payments in 1968–69; what proportion of this was attributable to Scotland; and what he estimates will be the corresponding totals for 1969–70.

Mr. Taverne

In 1968–69, about £195 million and about £6½ million (3⅓ per cent). The estimated totals for 1969–70 are £215 million and £7 million (3⅓ per cent).
