Mr. John Fraser

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what is the composition of his departmental committee of inquiry into speech therapists; what are their terms of reference; and when they will report.

Miss Bacon

The Committee's terms of reference and membership are as follows. The Committee started its work last July and it is not yet possible to say when a report will be submitted. The Committee's Terms of Reference are:

"To consider the need for and the rôle of speech therapy in the field of education and of medicine, the assessment and treatment of those suffering from speech and language disorders and the training appropriate for those specially concerned in this work, and to make recommendations."

Membership is as follows:

Chairman: Professor Randolph Quirk, M.A., Ph.D., D.Litt., Quain Professor of English Language and Literature, University College, London.

Miss Edna Butfield, M.B.E., Principal, West End Hospital Speech Therapy Training School.

Sir Godfrey Cretney, Headmaster, Regis Comprehensive School, Tettenhall, Wolverhampton.

Dr. D. E. Cullington, Principal School Medical Officer, Berkshire.

Mrs. Margaret Davies-Eysenck, Educational Psychologist, Moor House School for Speech Defects, Oxted, Surrey.

Dr. N. S. Gordon, Consultant Neurologist at Booth Hall Children's Hospital, Manchester.

Mrs. Mary Harris, Senior Lecturer in Speech and Speech Pathology at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne.

Mr. F. J. Hill, Chief Education Officer, West Suffolk.

Mr. Emyr Humphreys, Lecturer in Drama, University College of Wales, Bangor.

Dr. Thomas Theodore Scott Ingram, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Child Life and Health, Edinburgh University.

Mr. R. E. Rankin, Adviser in Primary Education to the Glasgow Education Authority.

Miss Catherine E. Renfrew, F.C.S.T., Chief Speech Therapist, Church Hospital, Headington, Oxford.

Mrs. Beryl Saunders, L.C.S.T., Senior Therapist, Hearing and Speech Centre, Bristol.

Mr. R. Walker, Headmaster, Mount Pleasant School, Darlington.

Professor Arthur Goronwy Watkins, C.B.E., previously Professor of Child Health, Welsh National School of Medicine.

Mrs. Shirley M. Wickerson, L.C.S.T., who has had recent experience as Senior Speech Therapist for Croydon.

Mr. Hunt Williams, Director, Audiology Research Unit, the Royal Berkshire Hospital, Reading.
