HC Deb 26 February 1970 vol 796 cc385-6W
Mr. Randall

asked the Secretary of State for Employment and Productivity how many males are currently unemployed in the Gateshead area; how many vacancies exist, skilled and unskilled; and how many jobs for such men, skilled and unskilled, respectively, are in prospect.

Mr. Dell

At February, 1970, 2,017 males were registered as unemployed in the area covered by the Gateshead Employment Exchange. There were 174 notified vacancies for men remaining unfilled of which 116 were in occupations generally regarded as skilled in the engineering, vehicle building, construction and woodworking industries. These figures are provisional.

Jobs in prospect for males expected to arise over the next four years in authorised new industrial buildings and in existing building taken over by manufacturing industry, total about 1,150. An analysis of these jobs by skills is not available.

Mr. Randall

asked the Secretary of State for Employment and Productivity how many boys and girls respectively, left school at the end of the summer term in Gateshead; and how many have yet to be placed in employment.

Mr. Dell

On 9th February, 1970, six boys were still registered for first employment in the Gateshead Careers Office area out of 405 boys and 396 girls known to the Youth Employment Service to have left school for employment at the end of the summer term last year.

Mr. Randall

asked the Secretary of State for Employment and Productivity if she will state for each region and for Gateshead, respectively, the number of unfilled vacancies at the latest convenient date for every 100 persons wholly unemployed, and the comparable figures for 1963.
