§ Mr. Peter M. Jacksonasked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what communication he has received from the 1820 Settlers National Movement Foundation in relation to the forthcoming celebrations to commemorate the arrival of the First British settlers in Grahamstown, South Africa; and whether he will make a statement.
§ Mr. LuardNone. The 1820 Settlers National Monument Committee has however written to our Embassy in South Africa suggesting that period plants or ornaments might be donated for a garden which will form part of the monument. Discussions took place on this proposal, and, after it had been ascertained that there has never been any discrimination 231W between whites and non-whites in admission to the garden, it was decided to meet that request.
In addition, the British Council is planning to sponsor two commemorative lecture tours to South African universities on early nineteenth century British history and on the English language.
