HC Deb 17 February 1970 vol 796 cc91-3W
Mr. Buchanan-Smith

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland how many student nurses and how many pupil nurses have entered training in each of the past five years; and how many students have entered the final examination for each section of the Register in each of the past five years.

Mr. Ross

The numbers of student and pupil nurses entering training were:

Students Pupils
1965 2,553 1,544
1966 2,412 1,568
1967 2,561 1,812
1968 2,371 1,831
1969 2,195 1,613

the offer would not provide uniform increases because the Management side is proposing a major reorganisation of the present pattern of salary scales in order to give greater increases where it feels these to be most necessary. The offer also provides for a 15 per cent. increase in responsibility allowances; and for doubling, in secondary schools only, the present inducement payment of £100 for teachers serving in schools of serious staff shortage.

The effect of the Management Side's offer on the basic scales of the main categories of teachers in primary and secondary schools is shown in the following table:—

The numbers of students entering the final examination for each section of the Register were:—

Mental
General Fever Sick Children's Mental Deficiency
1965 1,523 54 132 276 54
1966 1,520 23 113 259 43
1967 1,477 9 125 306 77
1968 1,422 148 291 60
1969 1,358 107 267 48

Mr. Buchanan-Smith

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what has been the average wastage of student and of pupil nurses in each of the past five years.

Mr. Ross

The numbers of student and pupil nurses who discontinued training in each of the past five years expressed as a percentage of the average numbers in training in each year are:

Students Per cent. Pupils Per cent.
1965 12.2 29.2
1966 13.2 30.2
1967 11.9 24.8
1968 14.3 29.8
