HC Deb 18 December 1970 vol 808 c492W
Mr. Arthur Lewis

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether he is aware that the general maxim that a man is innocent until proven guilty is not being applied to policemen when charges and allegations are made against them; and whether he will take steps to ensure that a policeman does not lose his salary when suspended until such time as any charges or allegations have been proved against him.

Mr. Sharples

I do not accept the implication in the first part of the question. As to the second, my right hon. Friend has already agreed, after consulting the Police Council and the Police Advisory Board, that an officer under suspension will receive pay instead of, as hitherto, a suspension allowance amounting to two-thirds of his pay. Amending regulations will shortly be laid before the House.
