asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry what plans he has to initiate research into the effectiveness of the new investment incentive system.

It would be premature to consider the need for special research before there has been experience of the new system, but I shall keep a careful watch on progress.

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry what estimate he has made of the number of new jobs created in development areas in each year of the operation of the investment allowance system; and what proportion of these new jobs was attributable to the operation of the investment allowance system.

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry what estimate he has made of the effect of the new investment incentive system on the level of investment in the chemical, motor car and shipping industries.

The precise effect of our policies on individual industries will depend on their circumstances. Overall I expect a high level of investment to be maintained and its effectiveness to be improved.
