Mr. Sheldon

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what estimate he has made of the current annual balance of payments cost of the United Kingdom's diplomatic representation abroad.

Mr. Taverne:

The proportion of expenditure borne on the 1969–70 Vote for the Diplomatic Service which was spent overseas is estimated at about £ 25 million. Additional expenditure by the Ministry of Public Building and Works on office and residential accommodation is estimated to have totalled about £ 8 million.

Mr. Sheldon

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what estimate he has made of the foreign exchange receipts due to overseas diplomatic representation in the United Kingdom.

Approximately £ 44 million in 1969.
