HC Deb 27 April 1970 vol 800 cc230-1W
Mr. Ron Lewis

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science how many children seeking admission to the Newman School, Carlisle, in August-September 1969 were refused admission; how many there are on the provisional list for 1970–71; and if he will give an assurance that this school will be given priority before the position becomes acute.

Miss Bacon:

In 1969 40 of the 168 children who applied for places were refused admission. 149 children have applied this year. If there is an overall need for secondary places in the area, my right hon. Friend will consider the case for extending Newman School in 1972–73.

Mr. Ron Lewis

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science how many letters he has received from the citizens and organisations in Carlisle regarding the lack of accommodation at the Newman's School, Carlisle; and what replies he has sent.

Miss Bacon:

Two from the Chairman of the Governors and five from Members of Parliament, together with a petition signed by about 1,200 people. My right hon. Friend said in reply that the local education authority should submit proposals when it can establish an overall need for additional secondary places. He is now considering the authority's proposals.
