asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer how much revenue was collected from motorists in the year ended 5th April, 1970, compared with the year ended 5th April, 1964, both in aggregation from all motorists, for each of the years stated, and analysed to show collections of revenue for purchase tax on new cars, petrol duty and road fund licences, excluding commercial vehicles throughout.

The revenue collected from motorists in the year ended 5th April, 1964, is estimated at £507 million, consisting of purchase tax £123 million, petrol duty £270 million, and vehicle licences £114 million. The hon. Member will have to wait until after the publication of the Budget Report and Financial Statement for the equivalent figures for 1969–70.
