§ 47. Mr. Alisonasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer by how much the increase in wages and salaries during the latest convenient 12-month period expressed in both percentage and money terms has exceeded the range of 2½–4½ per cent. recommended in Command Paper No. 4237, Productivity Prices and Incomes Policy after 1969; and what is his estimate of the increase in the standard rate of income tax required to yield an increase in revenue equal to the amount by which the rise in wages and salaries exceeded this range.
§ Mr. William RodgersOn a seasonally adjusted basis, wages and salaries rose by about 8 per cent. between the fourth quarter of 1968 and the fourth quarter of 1969. This is the latest twelve month period for which national income figures are available, while Command Paper No. 4237 is concerned with policy after 1969. I regret therefore that I cannot help the hon. Gentleman with the second part of his Question.
§ 48. Mr. Alisonasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer by how much the increase in wages and salaries, expressed at an annual rate in both percentage and money terms, expected to result from settlements and awards made since 1st January, 1970 has exceeded the range of 2½–4½ per cent. recommended in Command Paper No. 4237, Productivity Prices and Incomes Policy after 1969; and what is his estimate of the increase in the standard rate of income tax required to yield an increase in revenue equal to the amount by which the rise in wages and salaries exceeded this range.
§ Mr. William RodgersThe hon. Gentleman's question amounts to a request for a forward estimate of movements in wages and salaries. It is not customary to provide this.
