§ Mr. Juddasked the Secretary of State for Education and Science whether he will publish in the OFFICIAL REPORT details 216W of the ratio of student accommodation in approved halls of residence to total student population at each polytechnic and university in England and Wales, and whether he will similarly publish details of cost for full board at such halls of residence.
§ Mr. FowlerTable 5 of Volume 6 of Statistics of Education, 1967, gives the total number of students and the number in residence at each university in December, 1967. At the eight polytechnics so far established the ratio of residential places to total numbers of full-time and sandwich course students in 1967 was: Hatfield, 1:37; Leicester 1:18; Newcastle-upon-Tyne, 1:17; Sheffield, 1:46; Sunderland, 1:6; Wolverhampton, 1:15. There were no residential places at the Bristol and Portsmouth polytechnics. Information about boarding charges at individual universities and polytechnics is not available but the recommended standard charge at polytechnics is £6 10s. 0d. (£7 5s. 0d. in the London area) for students from England and Wales and the full economic cost for other students.
