HC Deb 21 April 1969 vol 782 c27W
Mr. Whitaker

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what is his estimate of the approximate amount of money needed by the British Museum to put all the items it possesses on public display, and to complete the catalogue of its books.

Miss Jennie Lee

A major part of the British Museum collections is of interest to scholars and would have very limited appeal to the general public. While the Trustees would wish to display a larger proportion of the collections and to bring all catalogues of books up-to-date, the aim of displaying everything in the collections is not a realistic one. The Museum authorities consider that the total cost of achieving this, including all the capital expenditure on building and equipment which would be involved, might be more than £50 million, though it is not possible to give an accurate estimate.
