HC Deb 21 April 1969 vol 782 c27W
Mr. Whitaker

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science whether he will extend the opening hours of the Victoria and Albert and other main public galleries and museums.

Miss Jennie Lee

The National Gallery already keeps open until 9 p.m. on two weekdays in the summer; and the Imperial War Museum started on 6th April to open on Sunday at 10 a.m. instead of 2 p.m. as an experiment for six months. In general, I should like to see the opening hours extended to suit the needs of the public, both in the evenings and on Sunday mornings, but this depends on the co-operation and availability of staff.
