HC Deb 04 March 1968 vol 760 c32W
Mr. James Davidson

asked the Secretary of State for Defence if the figure of £25,041,000 for increased expenditure on naval stores and materials, mainly for Polaris submarines, quoted on page 78 of The Statement on the Defence Estimates 1968, Command Paper No. 3540, is a once-for-all or a recurrent figure.

Mr. Foley

Provision for armament and other stores for Polaris submarines is only one of the various factors causing the increase on Vote 6. Capital expenditure on Polaris will be at or near its peak during 1968–69 and will thereafter decline.

The 1967–68 figures quoted on page 78 exclude the Spring Supplementary Estimate (HC 96 of 1967–68) now before the House. Allowing for this, the increase on Vote 6 between the two years is about £14,000,000. The provision for Vote 6 in 1969–70 and subsequent years will be affected by the review referred to in paragraph 3 of Chapter I of Command 3540.
