HC Deb 04 March 1968 vol 760 cc31-2W
Mr. Dalyell

asked the Secretary of State for Defence if he will give details of civil applications of work done by the Admiralty Oil Laboratory.

Mr. Mason

The reports of tests carried out by the Admiralty Oil Laboratory to assess the suitability of oil and lubricant products for naval needs are made available to the firms concerned. Since naval specifications are frequently similar to those of foreign Governments and large commercial undertakings in the United Kingdom, this work assists suppliers to make wider sales.

The Establishment makes its expertise available to industry through its active participation in the work of the British Standards Institution and the Institute of Petroleum, and is represented on the Research Committee of the Committee on Tribology. During the "Torrey Canyon" crisis, the Establishment did valuable work in evaluating detergents and giving expert practical advice.
