HC Deb 09 December 1968 vol 775 c12W
35. Mr. Stainton

asked the Minister of Transport what estimate has been made of future capital expenditure by British Railways in order to handle containers exceeding the international standard; whether he is satisfied that such expenditure can be financed within the new capital structure of British Railways; and whether he will make a statement.

Mr. Carmichael

Whilst the British Railways Board are, of course, aware of the possibility of non-standard containers being offered for carriage, they have not made any overall estimate. The need for investment to open up routes where nonstandard containers cannot now be carried has to be considered in relation to particular routes in the light of estimates of future traffic and revenue.
