48. Mr. Gresham Cookeasked the Secretary for the Home Department what are the results of the study made by his Department into the safety record of the 6,000 unattended self-service petrol filling stations in Western Germany; and how the record of such stations compares with ordinary attended petrol stations in that country.
§ Mr. Roy JenkinsOne company, which controls about one-third of the installations in question, states that only two fires have occurred since 1964. I have no knowledge of the safety record at other installations, whether attended or unattended.
49. Mr. Gresham Cookeasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what progress is being made towards giving approval to the Model Regulations for unattended self-service petrol filling stations; and when such aproval is likely to be given.
§ Mr. Roy JenkinsThe appropriate technical committee of the Standing Advisory Committee on Dangerous Substances takes the view that self-service at unattended filling stations presents special problems which cannot conveniently be considered in the context of the present326W revision of the Model Code. They are, however, aware of the need to resolve those problems as quickly as posible.
