HC Deb 09 March 1967 vol 742 c326W
50. Sir D. Renton

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether he is aware that the continuing large annual net increase in the number of Commonwealth immigrants coming here for settlement increases the already very large demand for houses, schools and hospitals; and what steps he proposes to take to reduce substantially the number of immigrants.

Mr. Roy Jenkins

I would refer the right hon. and learned Gentleman to the White Paper "Immigration from the Commonwealth" (Cmnd. 2739), and to what was said on behalf of the Government during the debates last autumn on the Expiring Laws Continuance Bill.

51. Sir D. Renton

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether he will now seek to offer repatriation to their own countries at public expense of those Commonwealth immigrants who have failed to obtain suitable housing accommodation or employment or who have been unable to settle in Great Britain.

Mr. Roy Jenkins

No. In my view the existing arrangements for assisting Commonwealth immigrants who wish to return home are sufficient.
