§ 79. Mr. Longdenasked the Minister of Transport if she will now take steps, by legislation or otherwise, to ensure that all motor vehicles are so equipped as to reduce or prevent altogether the emission of dangerous exhaust fumes.
§ 106. Mr. John Hyndasked the Minister of Transport if she is aware that measures are now being introduced in Western Germany and the United States of America to impose legal limits on the amounts of unburned hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide in the exhaust fumes of motor vehicles; and whether it is her intention to introduce similar measures in this country.
§ Mr. SwinglerMy right hon. Friend will make new regulations controlling exhaust fumes from motor vehicles if and when research now proceeding in this country under the aegis of the Economic Commission for Europe shows this to be necessary and practicable. The limits and methods of measurement adopted in the United States of America are not necessarily suitable for this country. I am not aware that West Germany has yet imposed, or settled, limits.
