Mr. Russell Johnston

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what action is being taken to increase accommodation for mentally defective children in Scotland.

Mr. Ross

I expect that within a year over 200 additional beds will become available for children in mental deficiency hospitals, and about 100 more during the ensuing two years.

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland how many mentally defective children are presently awaiting admission to an institution in Scotland.

442 are awaiting admission to hospital; about half of these are children whose needs are regarded as less urgent but who would benefit from hospital treatment.
