34. Mr. Bob Brown

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will reconsider the police force amalgamations on Tyneside so as to make it conform to the area of the conurbation.

Mr. Callaghan:

No. As there is no power under existing law to amalgamate parts of police areas it is not possible to establish a force for an area which would include parts of the administrative counties of Durham and Northumberland.
