HC Deb 17 April 1967 vol 745 cc37-8W
Mr. Peter Walker

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many drivers were disqualified in each of the years from 1960.

Mr. Roy Jenkins

The figures for Magistrates' Courts in England and Wales are as follows:

1960 41,006
1961 41,942
1962 42,011
1963 44,019
1964 49,488
1965 55,985

The figures for Higher Courts are not available before 1964. In 1964 they disqualified 1,719 persons, and in 1965, 2,075.

Mr. Peter Walker

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether he intends to introduce legislation which will enable the police to arrest a person who is driving while disqualified at any time of the day in any part of England, Scotland and Wales.

Mr. Roy Jenkins

My right hon. Friend the Minister of Transport and I hope that a provision for this purpose will be included in the Road Safety Bill.

Mr. Peter Walker

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many disqualified drivers were involved in accidents in each of the years from 1960; and how many such drivers were sent to prison.

Mr. Roy Jenkins

I have no information about the number of disqualified drivers involved in accidents.

The numbers of offences of driving while disqualified in respect of which the persons concerned were sentenced in England and Wales to terms of imprisonment by magistrates' courts were:

1960 2,026
1961 2,452
1962 2,423
1963 2,141
1964 2,104
1965 2,511

Figures for Higher Courts are not available before 1964. For 1964, the figures were 312, including two sentences of corrective training; and for 1965 447, including one sentence of corrective training.
