HC Deb 27 July 1966 vol 732 cc265-6W
78. Mr. Rankin

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he is aware that Glasgow will lose £2 million of Equalisation Grant because of the increase in its rateable valuation; what other towns in Scotland are similarly affected; and if he will take steps to protect ratepayers against the consequential rise in local taxation.

Dr. Dickson Mabon

The City Assessor recently reported that his original estimate of the new rateable value of the city was about £3½ million too low. The distribution of Exchequer equalisation grant in Scotland has therefore had to be revised, and the result is to reallocate some £2 million from Glasgow to other Scottish authorities. Because of the higher rateable value, the rate poundage in Glasgow should not be affected. No other authority is similarly affected.
