Mr. Wingfield Digby

asked the Secretary of State for Defence whether the undertaking by the United States Government to make further purchases in the defence field in the United Kingdom to the amount of $35 million represents a firm commitment to buy specific items or simply an additional maximum within which British firms may compete for orders.

Mr. Healey

As my right hon. Friend the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster said on 12th December, the $35 million represents purchases in the defence field additional to those to which the United States is committed under existing arrangements and understandings.
