asked the Minister of Housing and Local Government if he will take steps to ensure that building societies insist on National House-Builders Registration Council certificates as a condition of granting mortgages; and whether he will make a statement.

Before making any statement I would prefer to await the outcome of the examination which the Building Societies Association are making of the possibility of their members requiring warranties from builders before making loans on new houses. I would also like to take into account the other studies and consultations referred to in the answer given today to questions by my hon. Friends the Members for Birmingham, Yardley (Mr. Ioan L. Evans) and Willesden, East (Mr. Freeson).
