HC Deb 02 March 1965 vol 707 c226W
Mr. Kershaw

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science (1) what directions he has given as to the appropriate number of teachers who should receive special training in the teaching of retarded children;

(2) what plans he has for increasing the number of teachers with special qualifications for teaching retarded children; and what proposals he has concerning the pay of such teachers.

Mr. Crosland

The number of courses for teachers of the handicapped is steadily increasing, but it is proving difficult to find enough teachers to match the increased number of places. My predecessor in Administrative Memorandum 12/64, of which I am sending the hon. Member a copy, has told employers that he hopes they will make every effort to second as many teachers as they can to attend these courses. Pay is a matter for the Burnham Committee.
