HC Deb 21 June 1965 vol 714 cc159-60W
Mr. Grimond

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland whether he will ensure that, when adequate accommodation is available, the treasure discovered in Shetland by Professor O'Dell is returned to Lerwick.

Mr. Ross

The Government have decided that the treasure, which belongs to the Crown, should become part of the national collection in the National Museum of Antiquities. I understand that the trustees of the museum have signified their willingness to consider sympathetically any application on a suitable occasion for the loan of the treasure for exhibition by the Shetland Museum, subject to agreement on satisfactory conditions of transport and safe custody. This is in accordance with the general policy of the trustees to make available items from the national collection for local exhibition from time to time.
