HC Deb 16 June 1964 vol 696 c163W
Captain Kerby

asked the Minister of Housing and Local Government and Minister for Welsh Affairs (1) what arrangements are being made for the safe disposal of poisonous chemical wastes from the factory in the vicinity of Liverpool which is manufacturing sodium fluoroacetate 1080; whether it is intended to mix these wastes with cement and dump them on the Atlantic Shelf; and if he will make a statement;

(2) if he will name the factory in the vicinity of Liverpool where sodium fluoroacetate 1080 is being manufactured; and what are his inspection arrangements to prevent a recurrence of the events which occurred at Smarden in the Liverpool area, in view of the greater population in that area and the fact that the human acute and chronic fatal dose of this poison is not known.

Mr. Corfield

I understand that the factory to which my hon. and gallant Friend is referring is on the Kirkby Industrial Estate, near Liverpool, and has been acquired by Rentokil Ltd. Manufacture has not yet begun and arrangements for disposing of toxic wastes are still under consideration. When the process begins the premises will be regularly inspected by the local public health authorities with a view to guarding against improper disposal.
