HC Deb 17 July 1963 vol 681 cc55-6W
51. Mr. Wainwright

asked the Minister of Transport if, before putting into operation the recommendations of the Worboys Committee on Road Signs, he will give further consideration to changing over to right-hand driving in this country.

Mr. Galbraith

We are still considering the question of a change to driving on the right. To keep the cost to a minimum such a change would require a lengthy preparatory period before it could be brought into operation and I do not think that action on the Worboys Committee's recommendations should be held up meanwhile. We agree with the Committee that the new traffic signs should be introduced as soon as possible. I think there would in any case be advantage in giving the public time to familiarise themselves with the new system of signs before having to adjust to driving on the right.
