HC Deb 13 November 1962 vol 667 cc23-4W
43. Mr. Jeger

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what specific duties have been allocated to the members of the two boards set up in connection with the National Theatre; and what salaries are to be paid to them.

Mr. Maudling

The National Theatre Board is charged with the general responsibility of creating and operating the National Theatre Company. The terms of reference of the South Bank Theatre and Opera House Board are more detailed and I am circulating them in the OFFICIAL REPORT. No salary is paid to any member of either Board.

The following are the terms of reference of the South Bank Theatre and Opera House Board:

  1. (a) To submit for the approval of the Government and the London County Council plans for the erection on the South Bank of an amphitheatre auditorium for the National Theatre and an Opera House to replace Sadler's Wells.
  2. (b) To advise the Government and the London County Council on the allocation of the capital sums which they are to make available—not exceeding £2.3m. in all—towards the building of the National Theatre and the new Opera House on the South Bank.
  3. (c) To advise the parties concerned on the disposal of the proceeds of the sale of the Sadler's Wells Theatre in Rosebery Avenue, subject to the approval of the Charity Commissioners.
  4. (d) To be responsible for building the National Theatre and the new Opera House.
  5. (e) To advise the Government and the London County Council on the basis on which the National Theatre and the new Opera House, when built, should be used by the National Theatre Board and Sadler's Wells.
