HC Deb 04 June 1962 vol 661 c3W
28. Mr. Goodhew

asked the Lord Privy Seal if he will now make a statement on compensation for the three Bahrainis who were imprisoned on St. Helena and who were released last year by order of the Supreme Court of the Colony.

Mr. Heath

Her Majesty's Government have agreed, subject to Parliamentary approval, to pay each of the three ex-prisoners, Abdul Rahmanal Bakir, Abd Ali Alaiwat, and Abdul Aziz Shamlan, £15,000 in full and final settlement of all claims arising out of their detention from 1956 to 1961. In addition Her Majesty's Government agreed to meet certain other costs, amounting to about £5,000, incurred by and on behalf of the prisoners.

Parliament will in due course be asked to vote the amount by means of a Supplementary Estimate. In the meantime an advance will be obtained from the Civil Contingencies Fund as required.
