HC Deb 27 February 1962 vol 654 cc122-3W
79. Mr. Stodart

asked the Minister of Housing and Local Government and Minister for Welsh Affairs what was the average weekly rent of permanent local authority houses in England and Wales in 1938, 1949, and 1960, respectively.

Mr. Rippon

The average rent received for local authority dwellings in England and Wales in 1960–61 was 21s. a week. My right hon. Friend regrets that it is not possible to distinguish between temporary and permanent dwellings.

Comparable figures for 1938–39 and 1949–50 could not be produced without a great deal of work. But a recent sample investigation showed that in 1938–39 rents of council houses outside the county of London averaged 7s. 6d. a week.
