asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer how many civil servants are employed in Government Departments in London; and what proportion of the number is directly concerned in the day-to-day work of Parliament.

There are about 212,000 civil servants employed in the London area. Of these about 80,000 are in headquarters offices, excluding the Post Office, and are from time to time as part of their duties concerned with the day-to-day work of Parliament.
