HC Deb 13 February 1962 vol 653 c119W
8. Mr. Symonds

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he has now decided to give authority for the building of a university college for Cumberland and Westmorland.

Sir E. Boyle

My right hon. Friend the Chancellor of the Exchequer made it clear in his statement of 18th May last that it was the Government's view, following the advice of the U.G.C., that the establishment of any further new universities apart from the four then authorised must await the report of the Committee on Higher Education under Lord Robbins. One of the four new universities authorised last year is to be at Lancaster.
