HC Deb 13 February 1962 vol 653 cc132-3W
75. Mr. Fletcher

asked the Minister of Housing and Local Government and Minister for Welsh Affairs what applications he has now received for the development of the Caledonian Market site.

Dr. Hill

I understand that the City Corporation has agreed in principle with the London County Council that the Caledonian Market site shall be used for housing, schools and open space, subject to a decision on the future of the slaughterhouse. I am informed that the Corporation is discussing this matter with the trade and hopes to make proposals to Parliament in the next session for enabling legislation. Any application for development would, of course, be made to the London County Council, as local planning authority, and I understand that the Council is anxious that the whole area should be redeveloped in accordance with the new zoning as soon as the future of the slaughterhouse is settled.
