HC Deb 14 December 1962 vol 669 cc118-9W
Mr. Randall

asked the Minister of Labour how many adult males are currently unemployed in the Gateshead area; how many vacancies exist, skilled and unskilled; and how many jobs for such men, skilled and unskilled, respectively, are in prospect.

Mr. Hare

On 12th November, 1962, there were 2,119 men registered as unemployed at Gateshead and Felling Employment Exchanges and 59 unfilled vacancies. In September, 1962, the latest date for which an analysis of vacancies by occupation is available, there were five vacancies for men in labouring, and 37 in other categories. There are about 900 jobs in prospect for males in the area, but I regret that I cannot say how many are for skilled or unskilled workers.

Mr. Randall

asked the Minister of Labour how many boys and girls, respectively, who left school at the end of the summer term in Gateshead, have yet to be placed in employment; what are the anticipated numbers leaving school at Christmas, 1962; and what is the number of these currently registered as unemployed.

Mr. Hare

The provisional figures for 10th December are 20 boys and 2 girls still unemployed out of 430 boys and 374 girls who left school at the end of the
