HC Deb 12 December 1962 vol 669 cc80-1W
Dr. Bennett

asked the Minister of Transport if he is aware that at several points on the Kingston bypass road and on Putney Heath the flow of traffic is now interrupted by a combination of roundabouts and traffic signals at the same intersections; and if he will remove one or other type of obstruction.

Mr. Marples

Traffic signals have been added to roundabouts at only two junctions on this route, at Tibbetts Corner and at the intersection with the Surbiton—Leatherhead road ("The Toby Jug"), to increase traffic capacity at peak hours. They have been successful and I cannot agree to dispense with either signals or roundabouts. The "Toby Jug" signals are to be improved shortly by conversion from fixed time operation to vehicle actuation, like those at Tibbetts Corner.
