HC Deb 05 December 1962 vol 668 c173W
40. Mr. Wainwright

asked the Minister of Transport what consideration he has given in the interests of road safety to the circumstances where a "Slow" sign on a road junction approaching a very fast traffic crossroad has proved to be inadequate; what technical advice he has received on the matter; what proposals he has; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Marples

The "Slow" sign is used where the visibility along the main road at the junction is good enough to allow a driver to judge whether it is safe for him to proceed without actually stopping. The "Slow" sign can, where necessary, be supplemented by an additional "Slow" sign, by carriageway markings, kerb marking and by alteration in the layout of the junction, but this will depend on the circumstances of each case. I am considering, however, whether any other form of sign or marking is necessary at such junctions.
