HC Deb 15 March 1961 vol 636 cc117-8W
Mr. Awbery

asked the Minister of Transport what progress he has made in his review of audible warning systems for priority vehicles; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Marples

Following experiments carried out by the Joint Fire Research Organisation, I am considering the possibility of making the two-tone horn the recognised warning signal for police, fire and ambulance vehicles, as it is more effective in attracting attention than either the siren or the bell. Before I can come to final decisions I must consult the British Transport Commission, as British Railways use the two-tone horn as a warning device on diesel and some electric trains. This I am doing.
