asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what would be the increase of wages and salaries above the 1960 level, if the earnings of wages and salaries reached the same level in the third and fourth quarters of 1961 as they reached in the first and second quarters of that year.

7.4 per cent. That is the increase in the total wage and salary bill in the first two quarters of 1961, seasonally adjusted and expressed as an annual rate, over the total wage and salary bill for 1960.
