Mr. Awberyasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he is aware that the magistrates at a Bristol juvenile court recently apologised to parents for sending their son of 16 years of age to prison to await committal for borstal training at the next quarter sessions because there was nowhere else to send him; and what steps he is taking to provide suitable accommodation for cases of this character.
§ Mr. R. A. ButlerI am aware that there is widespread concern about the lack of remand centres to which young persons can be committed. I share that concern, and progress is being made with the provision of remand centres. I cannot at present say when a centre will be available for the South-West.
