§ Mr. G. M. Thomsonasked the Secretary of State for Scotland what consultations he has had with the University Grants Committee regarding the increase in the number of places in Scottish universities during the period 1960–1965.
§ Mr. MaclayThe University Grants Committee consulted my Department before preparing the proposals which have already been approved, for university expansion up to a total of 135,000 places, by the mid-1960's. About 22,000 of these will be in Scotland. As I informed the hon. Member for Dunfermline Burghs (Dr. A. Thompson) on 3rd May, I am keeping in touch with the Committee's consideration of the proposals of the Scottish Universities and the Royal College of Science and Technology as regards their contributions towards the further expansion of 35,000–40,000 places by the early 1970's.
