HC Deb 14 April 1960 vol 621 cc166-7W
Mr. Speir

asked the Minister of Transport how many accidents a year during the past 10 years involving motor vehicles have occurred at Kennel Cottages Corner at Simonburn on the Chollerton-Bellingham road in Northumberland; when he anticipates work to improve this corner will be undertaken; and whether he will ensure that such urgent work is undertaken before any steps are taken to resite the Boer War Memorial in Bellingham.

Mr. Marples

I understand that Kennel Cottages Corner is on the Class II road between Chollerford and Bellingham.

Twelve accidents have occurred since 1951, of which two were fatal, two serious and four slight. The other four did not involve injuries.

The Northumberland County Council is the highway authority. I have so far received no proposals from the Council for improving the corner.

I understand that the County Council considers that the junction in Bellingham could be improved if the Boer War Memorial were first removed elsewhere. I am told that the Rural District Council and the Parish Council have agreed on its removal to private land within the next three months.
